Short Man Syndrome

In the press coverage of Ahmedinejad at the UN, I was surprised to see how short he actually is, 5'4", 5'5"? Shorter than me, I'm 5'8". In undergrad we really tried to avoid dating short men. I am sure there are many nice short men, but my sistahs and I had run across enough exemplars of Napoleon complex and other compensatory behaviors. I mean, Ali Eteraz thinks "nejad" (his pet name for him, i guess) wants to be a prophet!
Would we have dated? Nah.
But perhaps shoe lifters or femur extentions could help. ;)

Comments:
Let a 5'8" man chime in here...

When a short man is a loud-mouth a-hole, he's got "short man syndrome".

When a tall man is a loud-mouth a-hole, he's "confident" and "assertive."

Seriously, pay attention to this in your daily life without preconception. Then again, I guess my "defensiveness" about this must be because of my height, right?

My late grandmother used to say, that she wasn't short, she was merely "highly concentrated".

Dan

Tall people with short man syndrome aren't called "assertive" they are also called a--holes...just like short a--holes are.

Ahmadinejad is short, yeah. And he seems like a messianic nutjob, true. And he called for the destruction of another country. OK. So he is short and he is an a--hole.

He was probably born to be short. But I doubt he was born an a--hole.

And it's always worth mentioning the left's fascination with people like Ahmadinejad and Chavez, who are first-class examples of religious nutjobs and weirdos. It's stuff like that which makes the anti-Bush crowd so transparent and untrusty. Anti-Bush and pro-Iran/Venezuela is, uh, unpatriotic.

Unpatriotic? Just say it... it's TREASON.

I'm still awaiting an answer on why a radical, marxist-socialist (Chavez) would pick for his ally and best little buddy a radical, Islamist... Didn't Marx condemn religion as the "Opiate of the masses" or was his condemnation only applicable to Christianity and Judaism?

But, there is strong parallels between Islam and Communism in practice (as well as Facism/Nazism)

Scorp,

The underlying principle between the alignment of Venezuela, Bolivia, Belarus, Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and the insurgent drug Marxists in Colombia is anti-Americanism.

Realpolitik in its most pure form.

Dave S,

Gotta disagree. I tall (big) loudmouth is a bully. A short (small) loudmouth is called a punk.

Not sure which is better. Maybe the punk, since the punk has less physical credibility.

Wait one darn second here!!

I thought that only idiots, like Bush, believed that secular regimes (Saddam, Chavez) could make nicey-nice with religious nutjobs (Ahmadinejad, AlQueda). Very smart people at the Huff Post laughed themselves sick at how stupid Bush was for even suggesting such a thing. I mean you have to be unbelievably ignorant... oh, nevermind....

My world's doing flip-flops! What's next? It'll turn out that the Kos Kids were wrong about WMD?? Diebold machines? The 911 inside job?? NOOO!! (crane-shot slowly pulls back from my tormented face shrieking at the heavens)

Calibration problem here, maybe.

Those with professional concerns about anthropometry know that the median American male is 5'9". A 5'8" male is shorter than average but hardly "short", as in, short enough to notice. The median height for American adult women is 5" shorter than for men.

They also know that the textbook data about this is a bit obsolete. The averages have probably decreased somewhat due to the influx of predominantly short foreigners over the last few decades. Actual data is hard to get, though, perhaps due to the general denial that so many of these foreigners are actually here.

Aside from anthropometry, the observation that unusually tall types are simply "assertive" rather than being dicks is doubtless spot-on.

Guys you nearly all missed the deeper clue here. She's told you how tall she is. Now you have to tell her how tall you are, so that she knows if you're worth dating or not.

She already knows my height ;)

6'3"

5'10"...

So does this mean you would have dated me in college, major?

Sadly I am just tall enough, but too old for her.

Can someone tell me if Ahmadinejad's parents were cousins? And were his grandparents cousins? And his great grandparents?

Something about him looks off.

I'd rather talk about flying cars.

I am deeply skeptical Jonson.

The reason is, that it violates the conservation of momentum. If a photon is leaving the rear of a rocket, then it's momentum is strictly calculable from p=h/λ where h is Planc's constant and λ is the wavelength.

By conservation of momentum, an equal and opposite momentum is imparted to the rocket. That's tiny for any reasonable power level.

I haven't read his paper, but I have a suspicion I can guess where he's going wrong: If you store a lot of energy in a resonant system like a closed cavity, then at the moment you open the cavity there is a large instantaneous power flux, and as a result a large momentum kick or impulse. But the effect is very brief. As the stored photons fly out of the cavity they instantly empty the cavity and the impulse is soon dissipated.

In the end, the cavity gives you no net gain in the long run, over what would have happened if you'd just let the photons fly out the back steadily, without storing them temporarily in the resonant cavity.

Of course it's always possible I'm wrong and the final test of any theory is to do an experiment.

Another stretching alternative might involve a rope and a neck. That seems to be somewhat popular in Iran anyway.

I'm 5'11" but I didn't even know Matoko was female until this post! Am I too late to enter the competition?

Matoko is female.

And I should remember to spell Max Planck's name with a "k".

I'm 5'10" and I even do hip-hop dance, but I don't think I'd want to date Matoko. :P

*makes his getaway*

phlegm,
If you knew what you were missing, (Check the mermaid) you would chop your own fingers off for typing that.

Well, I do live in Santa Barbara...

OK I get the picture - an oversupply of mermaids.

Well, perhaps you would find her equal at the UCSB.

At the #1 party school? Not bloody likely. ;)

eric, u wish!

6'4", 23.

Same interests, except...

I'm a Christianist!

At least, that's what Jesus keeps telling me.

What happened to PW, Nish?

(ignore the blog link from my name.)

Also, about the tall man, short man thing? The tall guys are not less recognized as being assholes. People are just less likely to confront them because they are physically more threatening. They're still very tiny inside... like a midget. No offense to the little people.
